Excerpt from The March of the Turtles:

Beyond the Sky and Back

I meant to travel not so far,
But rode beyond the sky and back
Where dreamless sleep sees fewer stars
And death is lost in pathless track.
Across dark heavens' daily flight,
Through depths of space-unaltered reach,
A fabric wove a thread too tight,
Though spoken by unhuman speech.
Encased in aeon's ancient tar
I saw the rigid limbs go slack.
I meant to travel not so far,
But rode beyond the sky and back.

The March of the Turtles is the third and final book
in a poetic trilogy which began with me contemplating
growing older and ends with death.  I didn't intend
for it to be this way when I first started compiling
these books.  Life has a way of intruding on one's plans,
though.  My wife's father passed away when I still
needed about fifteen to twenty poems to finish
up the book.  Unfortunately (fortunately?) Joe's death
provided a fair amount of introspective inspiration.
I dedicated the book to him.

I believe this will be my last poetry book.  I never
intended to do much with poetry beyond my own
enjoyment/amusement.  In some ways, poetry seems
to be a dying art form.  Beyond Maya Angelou, who
can name any well-known modern poets?  With the
poetry set aside, I can now start to focus on fiction.
